Project Manager – Business Improvement and IT/Digitally Enabled Projects

We are looking for an exceptional Project Manager to join our ‘Projects, Digital and Change team’ to support an organisational transformation by leading business improvement and IT/Digitally enabled projects. You will be a key member of the recently established change and business improvement capability in the Operational Services Division. We work closely with business teams to improve – or design new – processes or digital services so that HSE can work in a more efficient and effective way and provide a better service to duty-holders and the public.

You will do this by leading and managing project teams who are supporting a wider organisational transformation, typically, business improvement and IT/Digitally enabled projects and ensure project objectives are clearly defined and achieved within the agreed time, cost and quality constraints meeting customer and business requirements.

GIS Scientist/Analyst

We are looking for a Geographical Information Systems Scientist/Analyst to work in our Data Management and Spatial Analysis Team (DMSA) in HSE’s science and research centre in Buxton to support the team’s growing portfolio of work and help develop new work areas and analytical expertise.

Our Data Management and Spatial Analysis (DMSA) team work on a mix of operational and scientific projects, providing services and undertaking research and analysis to support HSE’s regulation and enforcement duties. Work areas include demographics, geographical risk modelling and land use planning, for both internal HSE stakeholders and external commercial customers.

Senior Data Scientist and Statistician

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist and Statistician to join our ‘Analysis and Data Group’. The Group comprises around 55 analytical specialists, including statisticians, data scientists and software developers and are central in providing data-driven evidence to support organisational decision making, and contribute to improving health and safety outcomes in the workplace.

You will be part of a growing Data Science team, expecting to quickly take ownership of and lead important data science and statistical topics. You will have autonomy to work and code creatively, whilst having the support network of your peers and managers. You are encouraged to exploit new data science techniques, such as mining and analysis of unstructured free text using a wide variety of open source software. You will have many opportunities to develop and use your statistical modelling skills.

Senior Database and Software Developer

Our Data Science and Software Development teams current work includes land use planning, probabilistic matching to support regulatory intelligence, risk analysis of operational data, software for physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modelling and the Discovering Safety programme; involving the development of new techniques to analyse data and aggregate data from sources worldwide to help prevent future accidents occurring. Our work is delivering analysis, data and software that has a significant analytical or scientific component, working closely with many internal and external stakeholders.

As the Senior Database and Software Developer you role is intended to facilitate the delivery of high quality scalable solutions to internal and external customers and grow the team’s capacity and expertise on structured and unstructured databases. We are primarily looking for expertise in databases but with the ability and interest to work as part of agile teams and help bridge any gaps between the teams skills and their expertise. The work is very varied and if you are looking for an interesting challenge which uses your expertise to help direct the future of our work then this could be the role for you.

Apprentice

If you are serious about working in a business administration role and can show the required determination to complete your apprenticeship programme then this is the role for you.

Our Apprenticeships combine practical on the job training whilst working towards an NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration.

As part of your apprenticeship you will need to gather work based evidence, whilst working alongside experienced staff. You will gain job-specific skills as well as an understanding about the world of employment.

You will develop an awareness and knowledge of HSE’s work and our organisational structure. You will also gain an understanding and knowledge of our operational and business support procedures and functions.

Electrical Engineer Specialist

The role offers a wide scope and draws on your skills and expertise while building your experience in a number of areas. Working with a team of technical specialists, you’ll make sure a range of industries across the UK have safe electrical installations. You’ll carry out inspections and analyse incidents, identifying the root causes and bringing in the right support to prevent recurrences. What’s more, you’ll provide expert advice to improve practices and guide legal decisions, as well as develop policy to advance industry-wide standards.

Naturally, you’ll need a breadth of Electrical and Control Engineering experience. This includes an understanding of the design, spec and operation of electrical systems and equipment in the workplace. We’re also looking for candidates who can analyse complex information quickly, make a sound judgement and communicate this to a variety of audiences. But just as much, it’s about building strong working relationships with other HSE colleagues to secure the best outcomes. You should also have a degree in Electrical or Control Engineering (or a related subject) and be either already chartered by the IET or be working towards this. A full UK driving license is also essential.

Offshore Industrial Hygienist

The role will build on your existing expertise but also develop your experience in a number of areas. As our Offshore Industrial Hygienist, you’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team tasked with inspecting offshore installations to make sure risk is safely managed and working environments are improved. You’ll also carry out forensic investigations of occupational health risks. On top of this, you’ll contribute to national and international standards for health and safety, helping to secure better practice for years to come. There’s also an advisory element to the role, and you’ll be expected to liaise with a wide range of stakeholders to provide guidance on health risk matters, including colleagues, professional bodies and trade associations.

You’ll need a proven track record in assessing and controlling health risks such as asbestos, radiation, noise, vibration, legionella, and food safety. Your industrial hygiene experience should also be specific to the offshore oil and gas industry or other major hazard industrial sectors. But just as much, you’ll need strong communication skills and the ability to analyse complex data, working well in a variety of teams to achieve the right outcomes. As the role involves offshore inspections, you should also be able to work offshore for several days at a time. You should also have a degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate science discipline and chartered membership of the British Occupational Hygiene Society. Alternatively, you can hold Licentiate Membership and work towards chartered status. A full UK driving license is also essential.

Molecular Microbiologist – (Specialist Inspector)

Working together with other HSE teams and colleagues, you’ll play a vital role in protecting workers in the life sciences and helping science and technology to flourish without the constraints of safety issues. As a Specialist Inspector, you’ll investigate facilities that handle hazardous microorganisms, identifying accidents and preparing technical reports of your findings. You’ll also provide specialist advice to a range of stakeholders including the government, industry figures and other teams within HSE.

You’ll need sound experience as a Molecular Microbiologist, including broad skills in the latest molecular techniques. You’ll be a keen analyst and able to identify biosafety deficiencies in a variety of settings. You’ll also be able to think strategically and influence others towards your decisions and ways of thinking. Naturally, strong written and verbal communication skills are essential here. You should have a degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate biological sciences subject, plus a PhD in molecular microbiology and post-doctoral research experience.

Molecular Virologist – (Specialist Inspector)

The role is an excellent opportunity to make the most of your existing skills in a stimulating, ever-changing role while building your experience in new areas. Working together with other HSE teams and colleagues, you’ll play a vital role in protecting workers in the life sciences and helping science and technology to flourish without the constraints of safety issues. But working for us also means joining an internationally respected organisation with an unrivalled history of progress towards safe working, giving you highly prized experience for your personal record. As a Specialist Inspector, you’ll investigate facilities that handle animal pathogens and hazardous microorganisms. You’ll identify accidents and prepare technical reports while enforcing the right actions where necessary. You’ll also provide specialist advice to a range of stakeholders including the government, industry figures and other teams within HSE.

You’ll need sound experience as a Molecular Virologist, including skills in classical and molecular virology techniques. You’ll be a keen analyst and able to identify biosafety deficiencies in a variety of settings. You’ll also be able to think strategically and influence others towards your decisions and ways of thinking. Naturally, strong written and verbal communication skills are essential here. You should have a degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate biological sciences subject, plus a PhD in molecular virology and post-doctoral research experience.

Biomedical Scientist (Specialist Inspector)

Working together with other HSE teams and colleagues, you’ll play a vital role in protecting workers in the life sciences and helping science and technology to flourish without the constraints of safety issues. As a Specialist Inspector, you’ll investigate facilities as part of our intervention programme, identifying incidents and taking enforcement action where necessary. You’ll also provide specialist advice to a range of stakeholders including the government, industry figures and other teams within HSE.

In terms of experience, we’re looking for outstanding biomedical scientists with an extensive knowledge of diagnostic microbiology up to Containment Level 3. You’ll be a keen analyst and able to identify biosafety deficiencies in a variety of settings. You’ll also be able to think strategically and influence others towards your decisions and ways of thinking. Naturally, strong written and verbal communication skills are essential here. You should have a degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate biological sciences subject (IBMS accredited or an HCPC approved degree). You should also be able to demonstrate relevant post degree experience.
