This is an exciting new opportunity for an exceptional senior leader to shape and deliver significant growth in HSE’s commercial portfolio.

HSE has been undertaking commercial work through its world class Science and Research Centre in Buxton for over 20 years. Recent strategic changes now put focus on developing the commercial provision of HSE’s IP, skills and know-how across a much wider knowledge base. This includes building on HSE’s existing international, shared research and data analytics work.

You will be a member of our Science Division Leadership Team, working with our Chief Scientific Adviser and Head of Delivery to maximise opportunities for our science to continually develop to meet the needs of the future world of work. The role requires the interpersonal skills to establish professional credibility quickly, to influence at Ministerial and CEO level, and the energy to thrive in a broad and demanding commercial environment.

Alongside business growth, you will bring a strong track record of commercial leadership within scientific and technology disciplines together with the credibility to operate at executive level.

Enforcement Officers

Our Chemical Regulations Division employs around 300 scientific, policy and support staff in York, Bootle and London. Our primary role is to deliver regulatory schemes intended to protect the health of people and the environment, balancing the economic and social benefits that chemicals offer to society and, helping to ensure the safe and sustainable use of chemicals. We also have a role through inspection, guidance, partnership working and leadership to raise awareness and promote behaviour change to help improve the control of hazardous substances in the workplace.  To achieve this and deliver improved regulatory outcomes, we work closely with small and large businesses, and key stakeholders, ranging from industry bodies and multi-national chemical businesses, other government departments (in particular Defra) and other regulators across Europe and internationally.

This is a frontline role where you will need to be able to influence duty holders, identify material breaches of regulations, act to remedy breaches and check compliance with duties defined in a range of chemicals regulations. You will work closely with CRD inspectors to gather evidence for prosecutions and to serve enforcement notices. You will also be expected to work independently upon demonstration of the required competencies.  You will be trained to support HSE’s work with the chemical industries.

Principal Exposure Scientist

To help us meet these challenges, we require an experienced Principal Exposure Scientist to join our REACH team. You will be part of a team that is delivering HSE’s objectives in support of the UK’s exit from the European Union. You will have a high level of understanding of worker and consumer exposure to chemicals. This will include having significant knowledge and experience of assessing exposure and human health risks. You will be comfortable working in a multidisciplinary team that includes chemists, toxicologists, ecotoxicologists, and experts in environmental exposure and socio-economic analysis.

Senior Occupational Hygiene Specialist

At CRD, we work with one goal in mind – to protect human health and the environment from the effects of potentially harmful substances.  To help us meet these challenges, we require an experienced Occupational Hygienist to join our REACH team.

You will be part of a team that is delivering HSE’s objectives in support of the UK’s exit from the European Union.

You will be a recognised, appropriately qualified occupational hygienist, comfortable in a multidisciplinary team that includes chemists, toxicologists, ecotoxicologists, and experts in environmental exposure and socio-economic analysis. You will provide expert knowledge and experience of industrial processes, assessing chemicals exposure and appropriate control approaches. The main focus of your work will be to assess applications within the REACH framework for the authorisation of substances of very high concern. A key aspect of this will be forming a perspective on the adequacy of the control measures in place. Additional work is likely to include the evaluation of registration data and contributions to other risk management activity, including the production of proposals to restrict chemicals that pose an unacceptable risk to humans or the environment.

Specialist Head of REACH Helpdesk, Registration and Authorisation Team

To help us meet these challenges, we require an ambitious Specialist Team Leader to join CRD’s REACH team.

You will be part of a team that is delivering HSE objectives in support of the UK’s exit from the European Union. You will have a high level of understanding of the regulation of industrial chemicals including having knowledge and experience of REACH, CLP & PIC and will be comfortable working in a multidisciplinary team that includes chemists, toxicologists, ecotoxicologists, and experts in environmental exposure and socio-economic analysis.

Project Manager – Business Improvement and IT/Digitally Enabled Projects

We are looking for an exceptional Project Manager to join our ‘Projects, Digital and Change team’ to support an organisational transformation by leading business improvement and IT/Digitally enabled projects. You will be a key member of the recently established change and business improvement capability in the Operational Services Division. We work closely with business teams to improve – or design new – processes or digital services so that HSE can work in a more efficient and effective way and provide a better service to duty-holders and the public.

You will do this by leading and managing project teams who are supporting a wider organisational transformation, typically, business improvement and IT/Digitally enabled projects and ensure project objectives are clearly defined and achieved within the agreed time, cost and quality constraints meeting customer and business requirements.

GIS Scientist/Analyst

We are looking for a Geographical Information Systems Scientist/Analyst to work in our Data Management and Spatial Analysis Team (DMSA) in HSE’s science and research centre in Buxton to support the team’s growing portfolio of work and help develop new work areas and analytical expertise.

Our Data Management and Spatial Analysis (DMSA) team work on a mix of operational and scientific projects, providing services and undertaking research and analysis to support HSE’s regulation and enforcement duties. Work areas include demographics, geographical risk modelling and land use planning, for both internal HSE stakeholders and external commercial customers.

Senior Data Scientist and Statistician

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist and Statistician to join our ‘Analysis and Data Group’. The Group comprises around 55 analytical specialists, including statisticians, data scientists and software developers and are central in providing data-driven evidence to support organisational decision making, and contribute to improving health and safety outcomes in the workplace.

You will be part of a growing Data Science team, expecting to quickly take ownership of and lead important data science and statistical topics. You will have autonomy to work and code creatively, whilst having the support network of your peers and managers. You are encouraged to exploit new data science techniques, such as mining and analysis of unstructured free text using a wide variety of open source software. You will have many opportunities to develop and use your statistical modelling skills.

Senior Database and Software Developer

Our Data Science and Software Development teams current work includes land use planning, probabilistic matching to support regulatory intelligence, risk analysis of operational data, software for physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modelling and the Discovering Safety programme; involving the development of new techniques to analyse data and aggregate data from sources worldwide to help prevent future accidents occurring. Our work is delivering analysis, data and software that has a significant analytical or scientific component, working closely with many internal and external stakeholders.

As the Senior Database and Software Developer you role is intended to facilitate the delivery of high quality scalable solutions to internal and external customers and grow the team’s capacity and expertise on structured and unstructured databases. We are primarily looking for expertise in databases but with the ability and interest to work as part of agile teams and help bridge any gaps between the teams skills and their expertise. The work is very varied and if you are looking for an interesting challenge which uses your  expertise to help direct the future of our work then this could be the role for you.

Apprentice

If  you are serious about working in a business administration role and can show the required determination to complete your apprenticeship programme then this is the role for you.

Our Apprenticeships combine practical on the job training whilst working towards an NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration.

As part of your apprenticeship you will need to gather work based evidence, whilst working alongside experienced staff.  You will gain job-specific skills as well as an understanding about the world of employment.
