HM Principal Radiation Specialist

Our Radiation Specialist Team in Field Operations Division (FOD) is a corporate HSE resource, with responsibility for delivery of key frontline work including investigations, proactive inspections and statutory functions in all sectors which use ionising radiation and non-ionising radiation with the exception of nuclear licensed sites.

HSEs plan of work for 2019/20 requires the completion of a targeted programme of inspections to enforce the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017.

The role of HM Principal Specialist Inspector of Health and Safety (Radiation) includes line management responsibility for staff based across the UK.  You will manage statutory functions, investigation and inspection work undertaken by the Radiation Specialist Team.   Part of your role will also involve close liaison and cooperation with the Radiation Team’s portfolio holder.

You should hold a recognised academic qualification in a physical science or related discipline which should be at degree or equivalent level.

You should be a member of The Society of Radiological Protection or other relevant professional body and hold Chartered Radiation Protection Professional status (or equivalent) or the ability to obtain this status within a year of taking up appointment

Project Manager

We are looking for an experienced Project Manager to join our project management team based in HSE’s Science Division in Buxton, Derbyshire – a world leading provider of health and safety solutions to industry and government.

The scope of our work requires a diversity of talented individuals, to deliver projects across a wide range of sectors including fire, explosion, process safety and engineering; occupational and environmental health; risk assessment; work environment; and specialist photographic and analytical services.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of Project Manager specialists focused on delivering Health and Safety Science based projects to customer requirements, time and cost. You can expect to manage a diverse portfolio of projects for commercial clients and HSE, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.

Your role will be to manage a portfolio of science based health and safety related projects. The projects will be a mix of both HSE (internal) and Commercial projects, of medium to high complexity/risk.

Battery Research Scientist (Fixed Term Appointment for 2 years)

We are looking to recruit a scientist/engineer to join our Hazardous Materials Team in the Major Hazards Group, specifically to work in the area of battery safety and battery testing. You will be part of a team of specialists and will also collaborate with technical experts across many other disciplines.

This exciting opportunity will be based in the Science Division of the HSE at our research laboratory and unique outdoor testing facilities, in Buxton, Derbyshire.

Social Research Officer

This is an opportunity to join HSE’s Economic and Social Analysis Team (ESAT): we are a small and friendly team which provides high-quality, evidence-based advice covering the full breadth of HSE’s remit and produces analysis and research that is used across the UK Government, industry, academia and in international bodies like the OECD and EU.

As most accidents and work-related ill health are related to human behaviour, an understanding of the drivers of human behaviour, and how human behaviour can be changed in ways that lead to better outcomes for the workforce, is vital to HSE’ s effectiveness.   In order to provide sound evidence-based answers to these questions and more, we collaborate with other analysts and specialists inside HSE, including statisticians, economists, psychologists, medics and policy advisors.

We also conduct some analysis on a commercial basis as part of HSE’s wider commercial strategy, giving our analysts the opportunity to deliver work for the private sector, universities and the governments of other countries.

Higher Engineering Materials Scientist (2 year Fixed Term Appointment)

We are looking for a scientist with an understanding of the effects of hydrogen on metallic and other materials to join our Engineering Materials Team in the Major Hazards Group. This is an excellent opportunity to use your skills to contribute as part of a team to valuable industry research projects aimed at preparing the way for the future UK Hydrogen Economy.

You will be part of a team of specialists and will also collaborate with technical experts across many other disciplines.

This exciting two-year fixed term appointment opportunity will be based in the Science Division of the HSE at our research laboratory in Buxton, Derbyshire. There may be the opportunity to extend the appointment beyond two years for exceptional performance in the role.

Director, Chemicals, Explosives and Microbiological Hazards Division

You will be one of HSE’s Operational Directors who work together under the Director of Regulation & Support in delivering operational work across a wide range of industries.

Socio-Economic Analyst

Our Socioeconomic Team has responsibility for providing high-quality evidence-based economic advice and analysis to support the development, assessment and implementation of risk management proposals under REACH. REACH is a Regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals.

You will be part of a team that is delivering HSE’s objectives in support of the UK’s exit from the European Union.  The team actively liaises and works with Policy analysts and science specialists in HSE together with representatives from other Government Departments and Agencies as well as stakeholders from industry and civil society, on matters associated with the socioeconomic and risk management analysis to support the regulation of chemicals.

To help us meet these challenges, we require an economics graduate with experience in the public or private sector to apply their skills as an economic analyst in government, with the attraction of a highly competitive, benefits and development prospects, located in the north of England. You will work in areas such as regulatory economics, cost benefit analysis, non-market valuation, and collaborate with scientists, policy advisors, and operational delivery teams on regulatory issues that matter.

Programme Management Office Manager

We have opted to move to a single merged PMO (Programme Management Office) for delivering business improvement, digital and IT change, with a view to expanding its scope and coverage, eventually becoming a corporate P3MO (Portfolio, Programme and Project Management Office) for cross cutting and/or significant programmes.

To ensure HSE can continue to meet current and future challenges, there will be greater investment in implementing news ways of working and implementing digital technologies. We are therefore reinforcing in-house capability to give us the skills and experience we need to take HSE forward.
