Our Apprentices will have the opportunity to work in either our Field Operations (FOD) or Human Resources (HRD) divisions, supporting your wider team in delivering a range of exciting projects, whilst completing a Business Administration Level 3 NVQ.

An overview of each department is below:

Field Operations Division – Our purpose is to prevent work-related death, injury and ill health and we apply a range of regulatory tools to improve health and safety, bringing together different interventions to achieve impact. We influence and engage stakeholders, create knowledge and awareness of health and safety risks, and encourage behaviour change through assessments and direct interventions including inspections and investigations.

Human Resources Division – The successful candidate may join our thriving recruitment team. Our purpose is to support the wider business in onboarding and resourcing activities. HR is a very versatile and diverse specialism, and in recruitment we strive to ensure compliance, promote equality, diversity and inclusion and affect change across our busy team. From right to work checks to ensuring that all candidates have an outstanding and consistent initial experience, you will be an ambassador of HSE, working with our many Divisions and Recruitment Team to provide a top quality service.

Senior Regulatory Efficacy Specialist

We have a fantastic opportunity within our Chemicals Regulation Division (CRD) for a Senior Regulatory Efficacy Specialist. At CRD, we work with one goal in mind – to protect human health and the environment from the effects of potentially harmful substances and mixtures.

As a Senior Regulatory Efficacy Specialist, you will be evaluating data from appropriately conducted efficacy trials in order to address relevant regulatory data requirements, and to support the various uses and directions on Plant Protection Product or biocide product labels.  As a lead specialist, you will manage, mentor and support members of the team, provide peer review of work, and lead on technical aspects providing advice to colleagues and wider stakeholders.

Paralegal Assistant

We have a fantastic opportunity within our new Legal Services Division (LSD) for a Paralegal Assistant. The Paralegal Assistant is a key role and one which will contribute directly to public confidence, both in HSE and in the wider justice system. Our legal teams cover a wide range of interesting and challenging work, including advising on policy and investigation matters across HSE, conducting criminal litigation and Notice Appeals in the Employment Tribunal, Inquests, and engagement with other regulators.

Your role will be to provide general administrative assistance to Legal Services Division. You will report to the Business Support Paralegal Officer and be working in a team of Paralegal Assistants. The Business Support Unit acts as the first point of contact for the Division, ensuring enquiries are dealt with by the appropriate person.

Asbestos Specalist

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated and enthusiastic Senior Scientist with a breadth and depth of experience and knowledge in asbestos. Some knowledge of other hazardous fibres and minerals would be an advantage.

The role will be key to

  • Influencing HSE’s technical guidance and policy decisions.
  • Enable the continuation of essential research to support the implementation and evidence base for HSE’s Control of Asbestos Regulations.
  • Support HSE Inspectors during asbestos related incidents
  • Contribute to HSE asbestos proficiency testing schemes

Scientific Team Leader

HSE has an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic Senior Scientist, to become the Technical Team Lead for the Biohazards team, in our Exposure and Health Consequences (EHC) capability portfolio.

Pesticides Enforcement Officer

We have a fantastic opportunity within our Chemicals Regulation Division for a number of Pesticides Enforcement Officers. These positions are open on a full-time, part-time, flexible working and job share basis across multiple UK locations.

This is a frontline role where you will need to be able to influence duty holders, identify material breaches of regulations, act to remedy breaches and check compliance with duties defined in a range of chemicals regulations. You will work closely with CRD inspectors to gather evidence for prosecutions and to serve enforcement notices. You will also be expected to work independently upon demonstration of the required competencies.

You will be required to undertake a combination of proactive and reactive duties, including involvement in investigations; and there will be a need to acquire an understanding and knowledge of relevant operational procedures.

This role will provide you with significant opportunities to develop knowledge of enforcement practice and policy and working collaboratively with a range of internal and external partners and stakeholders.

Explosive Atmospheres Engineer/Scientist (SD Band 3/ SEO)

We are looking for an experienced engineer or scientist to join our Explosive Atmospheres Team based in the Major Hazards Group at our site in Buxton, Derbyshire.

If you hold a degree level qualification in a relevant subject (aeronautical engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry) and either a chartered membership of your professional institution – or clearly holding sufficient experience to successfully apply, please read on.

The team is largely focused on the safe development of new energy technologies and achieving safe net zero, primarily hydrogen for heat & transport . The team undertake large (outdoor) and lab scale experimental programmes, consultancy and deliver specialised training, giving opportunity for both practical and desk based work. Several of the teams larger ongoing projects are high profile collaborations with other scientific organisations/government departments, which offers opportunity to publish work and present at conferences.

The work of the team is not limited to just energy. You will be contributing to a diverse range of projects within the health and safety sector, and be involved in both HSE led research projects and work for commercial clients. As part of the Explosive Atmospheres team, you will join a number of specialists with a range of technical backgrounds, who work together to create innovative solutions to technical challenges. As part of the wider Major Hazards group within Science Division, you will also have opportunity to collaborate with technical experts across many other disciplines, including material scientists, risk experts, modellers and human factors specialists.
