Scientific Technician – Fibres and Minerals

We are recruiting an enthusiastic and motivated Scientific Technician to join our Fibres & Minerals Team in the Health Group. Specifically your role will be to support the Asbestos Proficiency Testing (PT) activities undertaken within the Exposure Measurement Portfolio, which in turn forms part of the Health Capability Group, within HSE’s Science Division.

You will be handling hazardous materials e.g. asbestos, in a controlled and safe laboratory environment on a daily basis. There may also be periods of lone working in the laboratory.

You will be responsible for the delivery of the day-to-day sample production for the asbestos PT schemes. You will play a key role in supporting the team with the development of new PT schemes and you will support the wider Exposure Measurement Team with other routine analytical services and provide analytical support to other government departments, as appropriate.

There may be occasions when you will have the opportunity to travel for site visits and meetings, which may include overnight stays, as well as the opportunity for attendance at scientific conferences and to further develop your experience and technical skills.

Senior Regulatory Scientists – Exposure Team

In the Chemicals Regulation Division (CRD), we work with one goal in mind – to protect human health and the environment from the effects of potentially harmful substances.

Our Occupational and Non-dietary Exposure Team’s function is to assess occupational and other non-dietary exposure of people to pesticides and biocides. This is an exciting time to join the team and you will play a leading role in developing the UK Government’s approaches to assessing the risks arising from exposure to chemicals across a range of new and expanded regulatory responsibilities and work with a variety of national and international organisations and experts.

You will already be an established professional occupational and non-dietary exposure assessment of chemicals or have extensive experience in the field of occupational hygiene. Beyond your specialism you will work alongside a multi-disciplinary team of chemical and environmental scientists and other technical experts undertaking risks assessments using range of data relating to pesticide and biocide active substances and products. Your role will be to lead occupational and non-dietary exposure assessments and explain conclusions and decisions internally and externally, to independent scientists, other government departments and relevant stakeholders.

This role will also provide the opportunity to meet with a range of stakeholders across the UK chemicals sector who rely on CRD scientists for detailed technical advice, guidance, and training.

CRD and the Occupational and Non-dietary Exposure Team are predominately located in Bootle (L20 7HS) and York (YO1 7PX), however we welcome applications from candidates wishing to work at the other stated office locations. Occasional travel to Bootle and/or York would be required.

You will play a key part in contributing to the HSE evidence base for the Building Safety Regulator and be expected to work with stakeholders across HSE, wider government and beyond. The role requires appropriate application of a range of statistical techniques, using statistical software and be able to explain your findings to varied audiences.

Pesticides Enforcement Officer

We are looking for a Pesticides Enforcement Officer to join our team.
