Job description

Based at HSE’s Science Division in the Derbyshire Peak District, you will be Senior Project Manager on a portfolio of complex/high-risk science and engineering based health and safety related projects. The projects, for commercial clients and other government departments, will include elements of design, build, manufacture, and testing, generally using waterfall methodology.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Responsible for all aspects of project management throughout the project life-cycle
  • Ensuring through customer engagement that the projects plan accurately defines the projects aims, objectives and overall scope of work.
  • Motivate and lead the delivery team to identify requirements, plan the work, and manage delivery to quality, time and cost.
  • Proactive cost and schedule management
  • Understand the needs of a diverse range of stakeholders and ensure effective communications throughout the project life cycle.
  • Ensure effective project risk management is in place to ensure effective delivery and protect the business against financial risk
  • Ensure high quality project information/metrics are in place to meet business needs.
  • Lead post project reviews and ensure outputs are shared with stakeholders.

This role is based at HSE, Science Division’s Buxton Facility in Buxton, and it is expected that the successful applicant will be on site at Buxton 2-3 days a week.

This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your allocated office will be your contractual place of work. There will be a requirement to travel to the office for various activities e.g., collaborative working, supporting and training colleagues. If hybrid working is suitable for you and your role, the arrangements will be determined primarily by business need, but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. Therefore, we would encourage candidates to consider if the commute from home to the office is a feasible distance to travel before making an application. Please note that if you are successful, hybrid working will be discussed prior to taking up the post.

Part time working hours are available for this role. We can accept part time applicants who can commit to working a minimum of 30hrs Per week.

About You

You will bring experience of managing and delivering high risk complex projects at pace and have an in depth understanding of planning, risk management and project management tools and techniques, including cost/budget/schedule management.

You will have great stakeholder management and interpersonal skills, be articulate, credible, able to build and influence collaborative relations at all levels. You are a team player who naturally brings people together to achieve the desired outcomes and you strive to balance the needs of all. You demonstrate a high degree of personal resilience, with the ability to excel under ambiguous and ever-changing situations.

Essential criteria

  • Have significant experience of project management at a senior level, demonstrating strong knowledge and application, with a proven track record of successful project delivery.
  • Have strong communicating and influencing skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring on-time and on-budget completion.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with project stakeholders, including clients, contractors, and team members.
  • Experience in risk management, including identifying and mitigating potential risks throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budgeting and cost estimation.
  • Experience in project scheduling, resource allocation, with excellent negotiation skills.
